Lloyd Rees’ (1895-1988) depictions of coastal landscapes and rural townships are among the most recognisable images of the Australian landscape. Rees exhibited in Australia and Paris, and was awarded the Medaille de la Ville de Paris in 1987. Rees won the Wynne prize in 1950 and 1982. His works, particularly his works on paper, have been the subject of numerous monographs. Several major retrospectives have been held of his work, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2002. His work is held by the National Gallery of Australia and most state galleries.
