John Olsen (1928-2023) is one of Australia’s greatest artists – best known for his iconic landscapes teeming with life, flowing with his signature wild lines and bold colour. Olsen has given acute evocations of native wildlife and Aussie larrikins, but his chief subject was the immense and intractable Australian landscape. The joyful immediacy of Olsen’s mark defines the artist’s work. An intuitive process, Olsen often pointed to “the line that takes itself for a walk”.
